AUSTIN (KXAN) — Love it or hate it, MoPac is one of Austin’s most popular thoroughfares, getting people from one side of Austin to the other.

The road is so famous it even has a social media presence — “Evil MoPac.” The anonymous social media account is filled with snarky comments and funny memes about our rapidly changing city.

So where did it all begin?

“There is an origin story, I don’t want to go too far back into it,” said Evil MoPac. “It is not with like radiation or something in a lab, but there was a bad day on MoPac or a good day, depending on your perspective, and I said, ‘hey, I would like to share this joy with everyone.’ So, I jumped on Twitter and it was an instant hit like six months later…it took a while.”

Now the account has more than 60,000 followers and continues to grow.

“Austin is for everyone, well it is not for everyone, but a lot of people move here and I think that is a great thing,” Evil MoPac said. “I think that roads and trains aren’t nearly keeping up with that. It is just a benefit to me and my account.”

In an ever growing and changing city, Evil MoPac said finding things to laugh about is important.

“I think it is healthy to have a good self perception of ways that Austin is funny and ways that you can make fun of it,” Evil MoPac said. “I like to do that, but at my heart I do love this place and if I didn’t love this place I am not sure what I would do because I am afixed to the ground.”

Evil MoPac began a podcast last year, after the the surge in popularity.

“The podcast, we had a lot of fun with it and we had a lot of great guests on it,” Evil MoPac said. “There are still a few white whales out there we are still trying to get. Like Willie (Nelson) and some other folks, but it really went great. It is kind of like a toll road, but it is free, that you build and maybe there aren’t many drivers as you anticipated because there are so many other lanes they can be using, but people have reached out to me, have been real kind about it. I think the quality of the product is there.”

Season 1 of the podcast ended in 2023.

“Season 2 is on tap, well it is a road saying that, so I will say on tap for sometime in May of 2024, but you never know there could be delays with that,” said Evil MoPac.
