AUSTIN (KXAN) — Former President Donald Trump had another big showing in the New Hampshire primary after dominating the Iowa Caucus. But it was something he said in the run-up to the voting in New Hampshire that caught our attention.
Speaking at a campaign event in Portsmouth last Wednesday, Trump repeated a claim that his GOP presidential primary rival Nikki Haley “opposed” his border wall.
Earlier this month, the Trump campaign posted a 30-second ad on the social media platform X, making the same accusation against the former governor and U.N. ambassador. The ad cited a Time Magazine article from February of last year.
So what did Haley really say about Trump’s border wall?
The Time Magazine article referenced a Washington Post opinion piece from 2015, when then-candidate Trump was touting his border barrier plan. The article reported that during remarks at the National Press Club luncheon in September of that year, Haley said the following when asked about illegal immigration:
“Don’t say you’re just going to build a wall, because a wall is not going to do it. You’ve got to have commitment of ground troops, equipment, money, all of that to bring it together. Then you’re being serious about tackling illegal immigration.”

Haley did not mention Trump by name in those 2015 remarks. In a recent appearance on Fox News, the candidate called his claim a “complete lie.”
“I didn’t say I opposed the border wall,” Haley told the Fox News hosts. “I said I opposed just doing a border wall. I said that we have to do more than that.”
